Few times in my life have I ever felt so used by God, so overwhelmed with a sense of His presence and a sense of being needed than this past weekend (a busy one for us). Tears flowed. Many thanks to you, our great supporters. You truly made a difference in this place thru your giving, and God's name has been glorified. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of one of the most significant few days of my entire life.
Let me tell you about our weekend...
Actually, it all began when LCC preaching students & instructors knocked on all the doors of the poor community on the western edge of our city (Tacloban City, Zone 3 subdivision). We gave free meal coupons to families of this desperately poor neighborhood, where little children can often be seen going thru garbage cans.
Then, last Saturday, Jan. 24, these folks came to the church building here in Tacloban, with their free food coupons, where the Project Philippines team fed more than 250 children (not to mention parents & older folks who came). Almost 300 were fed.
The funds you supplied went to feed some folks who otherwise may not have eaten that day or eaten very little.
Then, the following day, Sunday, Jan. 25, we had more than 30 of these folks and their precious children worship with us here at the Tacloban City Church of Christ because of how YOU showed that God cared for them on the previous day. There were 28 children who visited and attended Bible classes, as well as several adults.
There is a slideshow on this site of several pictures, just a fraction of those who were fed Saturday. Take a look at some of the sweet smiles on the faces of the kids, as well as their thin, underfed frames, and in at least one case the diseased scalp of a little fellow.
We believe the love of Christ has been keenly felt by many of the poor in this desperate place, and I want to thank all of our great supporters for allowing us to be used in this manner. All my life, I've seen TV commercials of malnourished, needy children being fed thru others' Christian kindness, but I'd never before experienced being an actual part in it until this past weekend. Thank you, brethren, for this opportunity. May the Lord bless you for your generosity.
Just to let you know, we plan to do this on a regular basis. We supplied each person a bag filled with: a cup of home-made arroz caldo (a Filipino-favorite rice soup flavored with chicken), pancit (vegetables & noodles), a sandwich, and a cup of Milo (vitamin-fortified chocolate milk drink).
Next time, we will try a larger amount of food and cover a larger area of Tacloban. We limited the numbers this first feeding program to see if our facilities could handle this amount of people and whether our team could handle the work. But we feel we could do much more in the future with a larger crowd and larger amount of food.
We ask for your prayers as we are beginning to touch more and more desperation-filled and hopeless lives in this place. And thank you all again for your help.
Who Are We ?
Project Philippines is a team of approximately 15 workers, both Filipino and American, men and women. It is a 3-fold project designed to reach the lost and bring glory to God in the Republic of the Philippines, a nation of nearly 90 million people in the continent of Asia. The Philippines is an island nation of about 7,100 islands (only about a hundred inhabited).
The first phase of Project Philippines is Leyte Christian College.
LCC was born in the summer of 2007, in a meeting of our team at Tacloban City, Leyte. This great "gateway" city in the Philippines, sitting astride the great San Juanico Bridge which connects Leyte island with Samar island, is a vast, growing commercial city in the heart of the Philippines. It is the capital of the province of Leyte. You may remember Leyte from the events of the Second World War. Here, General Douglas MacArthur fulfilled his pledge ("I shall return") to the Filipinos on Oct. 20, 1944, with the Allied invasion of the Philippines culminating in the rout of the Japanese Army. Our work will be centered in this great city.
We have secured a nice property there on which we might build all phases of Project Philippines:
(1) Leyte Christian College, a preacher training school
(2) a pre-school, elementary school and high school
(3) a children's home for homeless or orphaned children.
We're looking for sponsors and supporters who might share our vision for the Lord's kingdom in the Philippines and lend a hand. We know it's a bold and ambitious plan. It will require lots of hard work. It also will require brothers & sisters in Christ standing behind it, in prayer but also in financial assistance. If that's you, contact us at eastepfamily@yahoo.com. Or write our sponsor congregation at this address:
